Dear All,

On Tuesday, May 24, the Jordanian security forces arrested the 24-year-old activist, "Al-Jamal", without presenting an arrest warrant, after he left his home to look for a job after he was subjected to security harassment while working on a small farm on which he relied to support his family. On Sunday, May 29, the activist “Al-Jamal” was brought before the Public Prosecution, and he was charged with “disturbing the peace of relations with a foreign country,” against the background of a post on one of the accounts on “Facebook” in 2020, but he denied the charge and said that the account had been hacked.  He was not responsible for that post, according to his family.

The selective targeting of the activist “Al-Jamal” constitutes an undermining of his right to freedom of opinion and expression, and an obstacle to the exercise of his related constitutional rights, as Article (1/1) of the Jordanian Constitution stipulates: “The state guarantees freedom of opinion, and every Jordanian has the right to freely express his opinion by saying Writing, photography and all other means of expression, provided that they do not go beyond the limits of the law.

Two weeks ago, the Jordanian activist began an open hunger strike, which necessitated his transfer to a hospital after his health deteriorated.

During the past hours, many tweeters and people concerned with human rights have been active in blogging through the hashtags #Freedom_Anas_Al-Jamal and "Anas Al-Jamal's Strike".

I call on Amnesty International to assume its responsibility towards freedom of opinion and expression in Jordan and to work with all available means for the release of Anas Al-Jamal from political detention prisons in Jordan.

With my Best wishes

General Inspector
